Join us to rally in support of communities demanding accountability for Big Oil’s climate lies. On October 5th, Big Oil will be at the Supreme Court arguing that they shouldn’t be held accountable for the harm they’ve caused. While SCOTUS is hearing Suncor v. Boulder, we’ll be outside making our voices heard.
What is Suncor v. Boulder?
The City and County of Boulder, Colorado, are suing ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy to hold them accountable for concealing the dangers of their fossil fuel products and to make them pay for the resulting local damages, including more destructive fires, droughts, and extreme heat. Last year, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Boulder’s case should proceed toward trial.
Now, Big Oil wants the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the case before the people of Boulder have their day in court to present the evidence against Exxon and Suncor.
Exxon and Suncor separately told the justices that their decision in Suncor v. Boulder could resolve “parallel suits across the country” that have been filed against Phillips and Conoco.
“The Court’s resolution of this case will have implications for the entire petroleum and natural-gas industry, including API’s members,” the American Petroleum Institute wrote in an amicus brief urging the justices to rule in favor of the oil companies.
On September 28, Judge Alito recused himself from the case because he was warned by the fossil fuel companies he is invested in that climate deception lawsuits “could adversely affect our business” (Phillips 66) and “financial condition, as well as the value of an investment in our common stock” (ConocoPhillips).
